The Elsewhere Odyssey
The Elsewhere Enigma
Circumfusion 17 |
I love the feel of thick acrylic paint under my palette knife or loaded on a brush. I love watching splattered or poured paint gently morph without constrictions as it responds to a surface and to the pull of gravity. I love the freedom and the spontaneity of the art making process. This is why I paint. My art has evolved from realistic landscapes of this world, journeying increasingly toward the abstract. Along the way, I played with size, textures, objects, symbols, and colors. A turning point came with a series of paintings I call Elsewhere – a black and white ‘other worldly’ collection of landscapes and ‘skyscapes’ depicting a world without the social restraints and pressures of the world we know. Though I had dabbled occasionally with abstraction, it was while painting Elsewhere that the real power of the abstract became clear to me. I began a serious venture into complete abstraction and the Circumfusion series was born. The definition of circumfusion is ‘to pour, to scatter, to spread about’ – this definition is what drives the series. The elements and principles of art and design, however, pop out hugely in the absence of subject and in the end, it’s all about how that pouring, scattering, and spreading comes together for a unified (or intentionally un-unified) image.
