Smashing the Bow

Artist's Statement

My paintings reflect my physical and spiritual connection with the Pacific West Coast. The soft grays and mists of coastal British Columbia have long been a favorite mood in my watercolours. The old fishing boats and working tugs of Vancouver have provided me with many wonderful subjects. Family, travel and geography are also main factors in my work. Our grandchildren have each been willing subjects for "paintings by grandpa".

Spending long summers at the family cottage in Ontario was my beginning attraction to water, sun and sky. Now living and painting on Indian Arm, an ocean waterfront community near Vancouver my physical and spiritual geography have a profound impact on my work. Every morning I wake up to a new soft gray sky with soft grays occasionally spotted with ochres and brilliant crimsons. Living for several months in Indonesia and reveling in the tropical sun impacted on my palette causing me to introduce sharp contrasts and brilliant colours, a challenging and exciting diversion from the west coast.

I began painting in the mid 1960's while working on my PhD in mathematics. In the 1980's I was strongly influenced in watercolours by my mentor Alan W. Edwards who introduced me to the Federation of Canadian Artists' Salt Spring Island Workshops. I coordinated the workshops from 1983 through 1988 and had the opportunity of being taught and personally tutored by well known painters such as Rex Brandt, Christopher Schink, Kiff Holland, Alan Wylie and Judi Betts.
