I believe that creativity is not a quality that is possessed by anyone, but that it is a universal energy available to all of us, and that we can align ourselves with this energy to use whatever talents or skills we may have been given. I paint in oil, working with several layers of paint to develop a richness of colour and texture. I usually paint on a coloured ground, and the subject matter varies, but generally the style of painting involves simplifying forms or ideas into flattened abstract or impressionist shapes. Until 2002, my work was mainly representational, developed from life or photos. However, it was always abstracted. Our world is filled with imperfection and my paintings reflect that. I never attempt to make my images look exactly like the images that they represent. Rather, I am after a feeling or an impression of the subject. In 2002, I began experimenting with abstract painting to overcome my own judgementalism of my work. I began to paint a series of paintings based on spiritual principles. I created the works by first meditating on a principle or concept, and then by painting it to express the feeling and concept visually. Who is to say what "prosperity" or "giving" looks like? In fact, they don't look the same to me from day to day, either. There is more than one painting of each concept, which is why the date became part of the title of each of those abstract paintings. The process not only helped me to stop being too self critical of my work, but also helped to evolve my work. I now continue to paint abstractly on a variety of subjects. |

One of the artists who has most influenced my work is Wassily Kandinsky. He believed that literature, music and art were the best vehicles by which to communicate the spiritual, and that art must be an expression of the inner need of the artist and should touch the soul of the viewer/listener. These are lofty ambitions for art, and I may never achieve it, but to touch the soul of another is a worthy goal, and one that I have set for my art. Even if it is never achieved, it is worth the effort because it helps me as an artist to grow and expand my own spirituality. |

I have always painted flowers because I identify with their delicate but strong and silent qualities. I particularly like Calla Lilies because they are not frail, but strong, simple and beautiful. Over the years, I have painted many paintings of Calla Lilies, but I am also inspired by Tulips, Sunflowers … in fact, most flowers. In addition to painting flowers, I enjoy growing them in my garden. The paintings are sometimes the fruition of having planted the seed, nurtured the flower, photographed it, and finally painted it. I also paint windows, doorways, pots and architecture from Mexico, where I spend a portion of each year painting. These architectural shapes and forms are interesting to me because I find beauty in their imperfection. Our world emphasizes perfection and precision, and yet it is not really natural in a human world. |

In the past 3 years, I have also traveled to Europe on painting trips, so I have painted subjects from France, Italy and Portugal. I continue to paint from reference material that I collected during those trips. I live in Delta, BC. I received my art training at the University of British Columbia and the Emily Carr College of Art and Design. I continue to attend a variety of painting workshops in the Vancouver area, and am an Active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists and the South Delta Artists’ Guild. I was raised in Saskatchewan in a small farming community, where I loved to be outdoors all summer and hated the cold winters. As a child I loved to draw, but as I grew up, I got away from my art. After receiving my business degree from the University of Saskatchewan in 1973, I moved west to Calgary for approximately 10 years. Since then, I have lived in Toronto, Vancouver, the Cowichan Valley and Mexico, and I travel as often as I can. I now reside in Tsawwassen, just outside of Vancouver. It was during my time in Toronto that I decided to reacquaint myself with drawing, and enrolled in a drawing class at The Royal Ontario Museum. My creative spirit was reawakened, and I continued to study art at the Alberta College of Art, Emily Carr College of Art and Design and UBC. In 1991, I received my BA in Fine Art from UBC, and my Master of Arts in 1993. Since 1988, I have painted as much as possible. My work is almost always in oil, although I dabble sometimes with collage, watercolour or acrylic. I particularly love the luminosity and feel of working with oil and am attracted to the intensity of colour that can be achieved with oils.

As a reference for my painting, I started to take photographs, and now I sell my photos on a series of cards. My photos are usually of British Columbia gardens and flowers, or from my travels. As it has been my lifelong journey to unleash my creative spirit, I developed a two-day workshop entitled “Express Your Creative Spirit,” which I offer now on a regular basis to support others in their creative journeys. I am a member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, the South Delta Artists’ Guild and the Delta Community Arts Council. My work is held in private collections in Mexico, the United States and Canada. I make my home in Tsawwassen where I am currently working on getting my studio set up so that it can be open to the public for studio visits, painting sessions and classes. For now, you can visit my studio by appointment by contacting me via email at cweaver@dccnet.com, or visit my web page at the Canadian Federation of Artists site, www.artists.ca, and look for my ‘studio’.
