Artist's Statement

I believe art is not limited to a single medium or style. My work retains some realism but also includes abstraction, metaphor and subtle meaning. As preparation, I write poetry about my feeling for the scene before beginning to paint. Most people appreciate the distinctive quality of my work which has been described as Oriental. I achieve a very personal interpretation by unique applications of watercolour on unusual painting surfaces.

From an early age I was influenced by the philosophy of The Group of Seven artists. Later in my life, my interest in architecture and ecology followed by extensive travel and work in Africa, The Middle East and Asia provided dramatic and poignant images which continue to influence my life and art. Subsequent to living abroad, I obtained a Masters degree in Ecological Design and a Bachelor of Fine Arts (graduating with distinction), from the University of Regina. I have painted since childhood, recording my travels in pen, pencil and watercolour. My subjects include buildings, rugged northern landscapes and portraits. Two of my murals, over sixteen feet long, hang permanently on board the recently commissioned, Canadian frigate, HMCS Regina.

The son of an accomplished musician and painter, I have been a student of the arts all my life. I show my enthusiasm for the natural world in colourful, abstract landscapes, employing unconventional materials and techniques. My paintings recall my travels as well as my favourite place on earth -- the rugged Precambrian Shield country of Northern Canada. My current interest lies in the integration of environmental design and fine art which takes form in my building projects. In addition to serving on the boards of two local galleries, I acted as juror for the MacKenzie Art Gallery and the Organization of Saskatchewan Arts Councils. I teach art workshops throughout the province and am an Active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists and the Prairie Artists Guild. I have received a number of awards for my paintings, my architecture and my contributions to international development.
