A Glad Design
28 x 36"
watercolour

Like many children, the young Erna (Sawatzky) Ewert dreamed of becoming an artist. Unfortunately, childhood dreams have a habit of falling by the wayside as families and work take priority over the years. But Erna didn't let go of her dream, which meant going back to school when most people would be taking a leisurely retirement, and 1983 she graduated with a Fine Arts Major in Painting and Printmaking from the University College of the Fraser Valley, Abbotsford, BC. Erna creates works in watercolour, acrylics, collages, oils, limited edition hand pulled lithographs, collograph, seragraphs, and monoprints. Her style is realistic to painterly to semi-abstracts, in analogous, vibrant and pastel colours.

In 1983 Erna graduated with a Fine Arts Major in Painting and Printmaking from the University College of the Fraser Valley. She was influenced, in her post graduate studies by Mircho and Janina Jakafow. She attended professional seminars under instructors; Judith Betts AWS-NWS; Carole Barnes AWS; Rex Brandt NA-AWS; Jane Brunham AWS-NWS; Carl Dalio AWS-NWS; Linda Doll AWS-NWS; Robert Genn SFCA; Katharine Wenig O'Connor AWS; Christopher Schink FCA; Zoltan Szabo and Harry Heine SFCA. In 1991 the Federation of Canadian Artists elected Erna Signature Status (AFCA).

Ewert's artistic motivation in her love of family, that inspires her to record pictorially her lifetime journey of a rich heritage and lifelong experiences that "touch the windows of the inner soul" inviting the viewers to respond accordingly. She look for techniques and subject matter that create a new approach, a new style, a new variety and experimental search to the emotional and spiritual.
