Glow (Squash Flower) |
When I observe a landscape or an object, I am looking to find what makes the ordinary special. When I find the quality of a scene which makes it resonate and rise above the mundane, I then attempt to convey the same experience in a painting. I use photographic techniques and particularities within the painterly process. I often crop a familiar scene as if using a camera viewfinder, zooming in and extracting a part of a whole. I will compress an image and omit the middle ground, as if using a telephoto lens. I will look at a scene from an unusual viewpoint. I will alter or distort colours and shapes as if changing lenses or filters. In my artwork, I invite the viewer to look at the familiar in new and challenging ways. I received a diploma from Emily Carr College of Art in Vancouver B.C., and have a B.A., B.F.A., and M.A. in the arts from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver B.C. I have been exhibiting artwork in solo and group exhibitions since 1982. My work hangs in private and corporate collections in Canada, the United States, and Japan. I am available to teach workshops and I welcome commissions. |
