| In the tradition of the French master impressionists I work "en plein air" on site in my beloved France, whenever possible, where I have been recognized as an impressionist and awarded an impressive number of medals for my free flowing florals, architectural images and waterscapes/landscapes, for composition, originality and technique; including the medals of the towns of Gimont and St. Galmier. I work wet in wet with a limited palette of three primary colours and my unique trademark white china dinner plate palette, which becomes a beautiful piece of abstract art as I mix a full range of hues on it, and which I offer my clients as a companion piece to my original watercolour. My unique wet in wet technique with a limited palette and exclusive use of flat brushes allows me to create 'sfumato' or slightly blurred images, a hint or suggestion of an object allowing my viewer to complete the image from his/her own experience and to draw from my work a personal interpretation. As in the Ikebana Japanese tradition of flower arranging less is more; I prefer the pure translucent uncluttered image imbued with feeling that speaks from the soul. In the words of Victor Hugo "There is one spectacle grander than the sea, that is the sky; there is one spectacle grander than the sky; that is the interior of the soul". I create soft edges and gently blurred "impressionistic" images which evoke reverie, imagination and an exciting sense of movement and freedom. Working alternatively the negative and positive I achieve the desired effect I am striving for. I do not glaze as I want the clarity and purity of my initial three washes of pale yellow, light peach or mango and light purple to remain unsullied. I start every painting with the same three washes the light yellow covers lightly all the highlighted areas of my image, wherever the light source is striking, the light orange/peach introduces the next level or intensity of tones (mid tone areas) and an overall warm colour with the final wash of purple, its complementary colour, indicating all shadow areas and future dark tones, as I work from light to darkest of darks. To maintain my soft edges I am working against time and therefore I have developed the unique technique of using multiple same size brushes loaded with different colours of paint, and one with water only and one that is perfectly dry. This technique, plus having visualized the finished image, by having mentally thought it out for weeks, months before drawing the rough contour sketch to ensure good composition and starting to apply paint to paper, is the challenge of watercolour, the most demanding of all mediums, for once the colour is applied there is no changing one's mind nor covering an error! |
