About the ArtistDebra MacArthur was born in London Ontario but has called British Columbia her home since 1979. A long time resident of the west coast, she loves being surrounded by the mountains, woodlands and coast and it is this love of the west coast that has inspired her as a landscape painter. Over the past few years, her ongoing exposure to art and painting has given her a gift- a new and different way of seeing the world around her. Her art has given her an awareness of a world where everyday scenes, experiences and objects are full of light, colour, design and texture. Where trees are more than just green foliage on branches, shadows are more than grey, cool places for shade, and a lake is more than blue water and waves. It is this gift of truly seeing the beauty in our everyday life that she strives to share with others through her art. Debra’s work has included still life however as Whistler is her home, most of her artwork features Whistler landscapes with most of her recent work portraying what she likes to call “wilderness accessible by the ordinary person”. These are those wonderful spots, not accessible by car, but easily accessible by foot, kayak or skis.

Artist StatementMy art carries no message, and it carries no deep meaning. I paint what I love - the trees, mountains, water, sunsets and sunrise. I am constantly amazed that nature and a sense of the unspoiled beauty of West Coast, can be experienced and enjoyed with relatively little effort. Living in Whistler, these experiences are part of my daily life – it just takes a little “off the beaten track” exploring. I am surrounded by what I like to call “accessible wilderness for the ordinary person” and I am inspired by the gratitude I feel because my lifestyle and where I live, affords me the opportunity for such a fabulous outdoor experience. I have found that my photography can capture the beauty of the place, but most often, it fails to capture the “beauty of the moment”. It is my hope that through my art, I can depict the wonder of those moments and that I succeed in giving the viewer an appreciation for the Whistler lifestyle. Debra is an Active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists. Her art training has included numerous workshops offered through the Vancouver Academy of Art and the FCA with some of B.C.’s most well known and respected artists including Robert Genn, Kiff Holland, David Langevin, Suzanne Northcott, Michael OToole, Janice Robertson, Mike Svob, and Alan Wylie.
