About
the Artist
My physical subject is flowers, but my spiritual subject
is light. For me, the petals of flowers are like the pieces of stained
glass in a cathedral window, staining the pure white light with their
incredibly clear and beautiful colours. I have always loved pure colour
and remember as a child being fascinated by the way the cut glass window
near our front door broke up the light into tiny rainbows that danced
around the front hall. For me, watercolour is the perfect medium as it
allows me to superimpose clear layers of colour and maintains transparency
in all but the darkest mixtures.

I have
been interested in creativity and consciousness all my life and have followed
various paths in pursuit of these interests. After a BA in Combined Honours
Fine Arts and English I completed in 1974 a Ph.D. on the art and poetry
of William Blake. In 1975 I became a teacher of Transcendental Meditation,
studying in Europe with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. My own practice of TM has
deeply enriched my life and my art, enabling me to tap more easily my
inner creative core. From 1992-1994 I studied Chinese Brush Painting,
learning techniques of brushwork and wetness control along with Chinese
principles of composition and balance. Later I studied with various western
watercolour artists, including Caren Heine, Ann Hunter, Alan Bruce, Sheena
Lott and Brent Heighton. Since 1996 I have been developing my own unique
style of floral watercolours: large vibrant close-ups that reveal the
spiritual essence of the flowers I paint and beyond them, my own spiritual
relationship with the world. In March 2000 the FCA elected me to
Signature Status (AFCA).

I don't
paint flowers just because they are 'pretty'. I paint them because
their loveliness has a way of making us see the world afresh. Their
intricate patterns capture our attention while their clear colours
capture our heart. I hope my paintings help cleanse the doors of perception
so that we, like Blake, can “See a World in a Grain of Sand / And a
Heaven in a Wild Flower.”
