Kabale Woman

Born in London, Ontario, and raised in the Niagara Region, I have lived in Canada, Kenya, Uganda and Ethiopia while pursuing life as wife, mother and artist. My family and I have been members of the Expatriate Tribe... fringe dwellers in other cultures and societies. As a result, there is a synthesis of ideas and understandings that are particular to those of us who have shared in those cultures and living conditions, which brings us to a point of recognizing the universal humanity in us all, while appreciating the colourful and cultural practices which make us unique. My art reflects the struggle, understanding and, ultimately, humour that accompany the many adjustments which work to combine my African and Canadian experiences. From my first etching with a bobby pin on my mother's coffeetable as a young child to the large as life paintings that reflecting village life in Uganda as a wife and mother, mark making has always been one of my chosen responses. Constantly seeking understanding, balance and synthesis, my work continues to find its expression in parallels of abstract architectural relationships, vignettes of narratives, and reaches for the common archetypes we share as a human family. My chosen mediums of painting and printmaking give me the opportunity to work both responsively and meditatively. The sheer joy of working with the process of art keeps me exploring new ways to make meaningful works and share them with others. For me, the joy and learning come from the process of making art, not necessarily the finished object. May it always be so. I have returned to my Canadian roots, and now live on Pender Island, British Columbia. My work can be seen in my studio, Tulifanya Studio on Pender Island.
