DONNA BASPALY, SFCA
Donna Baspaly, a successful Vancouver
artist, claims that the secret to her success is the feelings she translates through her
work. She draws her subject matter from within, dealing with it both emotionally and
intellectually, while simultaneously externalizing onto a two-dimensional surface. Her
work incorporates her many interests and sensibilities, so it seems natural that as
Donna's life changes so does her art. Describing the creative process as organic, Donna's
ability to change and grow has made the relationship she shares with her art a single
evolving organism.
Baspaly's work is often multi-layered combining different techniques to
create depth and diversity within a single image. Her techniques speak to spontaneity and
chaos while deliberately maintaining a balance or order. Donna has called herself an
experimental painter; each new image uses a different combination of techniques and
mediums including oil pastel, acrylic ink, watercolour, stamping, glazing, gesso, and
collage.
Donna believes in committing to what is important in her life; women's
issues, community, family and art. This sense of commitment combined with her strong
talent has resulted in the recognition of her peers. Donna is one of only fifteen women to
have signature status in the Federation of Canadian Artists (FCA), and has also earned
signature status with the Northwest Watercolor Society (NWWS). She has won acclaim for her
design work attracting notable commissions including a signature line of bedding for
Daniadown. She currently serves as Chairperson of the FCA's International Millennium Art
Exhibition, does jury duty for multiple art organizations and exhibitions, and is a
sought-after art instructor. Donna Baspaly's impressive career has recently been featured
in International Artists' Magazine and Somerset Studio Magazine.
