Jossane VanHees was born in the small town of Killam, Alberta, the seventh child of eight. At the age of 10 we moved to Vancouver, BC where I received my first set of oil paints and my first classes, 'Painting in the Parks.' The dye was cast and my interest continued throughout school and beyond. In my early 20's. I longed for formal training. However, night school with the Vancouver Art School, private classes and short lived attempts at painting and drawing squeezed in while my 3 children were toddlers were the limits. The most enriching and pivotal progress started when I joined the Port Moody Art Association. The wonderful artist, Robert Genn would come once a month for critiques. Robert liked my work and I noticed that he was always a little tougher on me than most. I would quake in my boots when it was time to put my painting up, but I learned so much that I am forever indebted to him for those critiques and instilling in me the belief that I could paint. There have been many other classes and workshops with thoroughly wonderful artists, too many to mention, and all have contributed in so many ways. |
