ELIZABETH WILTZEN, SFCA Elizabeth's hiking, climbing and skiing expeditions have taken her into remote areas of the Canadian Rockies. Over time, her experiences have inspired her, and made her intimately aware of the magic and beauty that is found in these powerful places. For 15 years, Elizabeth focused on exploring watercolour as a means of expressing her deep affinity for the mountain environment. Most recently, she has become intrigued with oil painting in her pursuit of new and continually challenging ways to share her perceptions. In this medium she has found a channel that more clearly enables her to express her personal artistic vision. “Oils free me to explore more adventurously and confidently. I find the ability to move paint around the canvas for an extended period of time allows me to be much more involved in the painting process, giving me the opportunity to change things on an ongoing basis as the painting unfolds and finds its own voice. As well, the richness of colour and texture in oil paint combined with the power and impact of painting large canvases is very much aligned with my impressions of the natural world. These factors keep the process continually stimulating and exciting, and constantly trying new things keeps my work fresh and makes every painting an adventure.” While being primarily self taught, she attributes much of her success to the valuable influence of the prominent artists with whom she has studied, combining their guidance with her dedication to developing a style of her own. Elizabeth is a signature member of the Society of Canadian Artists, the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour, and the Federation of Canadian Artists, and is represented in galleries throughout Western Canada. |
