Let loose and have fun in this 2-day workshop with sought-after instructor Barry Rafuse, whose visiting us from Coldstream, BC!

This course is designed to meet the needs of artists wishing to explore abstraction. The workshop will start with a demonstration of a large abstract painting accompanied by hand-out material and informational literature to initiate class discussion. The following warm-up painting exercises will be implemented to encourage artists to paint outside their comfort zone and explore visual ideas on canvas. This will be a risk taking workshop, where artists will be pushed to paint on the edge and inspired to trust their instincts!

The course is intended for artists interested in painting abstracts and to challenge painters to paint outside their comfort zones. For these reasons, participants should consider this a time to explore and stretch their painting skills.

If the painter normally uses watercolour, then this could be the time to try something different like acrylic or mixed media. If the artist usually paints on small surfaces, then now could be the time to go large. Place yourself in a situation where you cannot "control" end results. And remember - painting is fun. Right?

Artist Statement

www.barryrafuse.com

Over the years, I have gone from painting traditional landscapes, seascapes and florals to bold abstracts.  It has been an expressional journey.  Now, I find satisfaction and never ending challenge through abstraction - not an easy task.  I strive to paint something "different" - something which is colourful, bold and thought provoking.  I am influenced by designs that exist in nature.  Cloud formations, rock patterns, snow and frost compositions, magnified foliage patterns, erosion damage all catch my attention.  These dramatic colours, textures and designs are forever unique and so often taken for granted.

I avoid predictable compositions. I like to push the medium, to take chances and to explore the paintings potential by experimenting with materials and techniques.  Rarely do I have preconceived ideas for an end result.  I like to trust the direction the paint takes and to listen to what the subject wants to become - a painting does evolve with proper handling.  It is this adventure, this challenge to master the process that excites me.

I use large brushes to keep myself from being too detailed.  I strive for an energetic look by using bold strokes and combining mixed media.  Oil sticks, oil pastels, and scratch marks keep my paintings looking loose.  I like to combine materials, partly for the overall effect but also because of the challenge this provides.  I opt for large surfaces because I can be aggressive and spontaneous.

My wish is that when a person views one of my paintings from a distance, it will be enjoyed.  When one gets close to the image, new things will be discovered and appreciated.
