If you're looking for a fun way to spend a Sunday, and come away with a finished watercolour painting, this "one shot" workshop with Frank is for you.

All supplies, brushes, paint, tools and paper are included in the price so you can paint along with Frank to recreate an Arbutus Seascape.

Workshop Overview

This workshop depicts a close-up view of an arbutus tree with the Gulf Islands in the background, and some small, closer, cresting waves.  All painting supplies will be provided for, including a working photo and enlargement for tracing purposes.

Workshop Objectives

In this workshop several techniques will be demonstrated that will be applicable to some of the painting features. This includes how to illustrate distant islands, reflections of the nearest island, cresting waves in the foreground (achieved through a scratching technique with an x-acto knife), and lastly, how to achieve the shading gradations utilizing several different colours on the tree trunk.

 About the Instructor -

Frank Townsley

"I am an avid naturalist and traveler who loves to document life's experiences in photography and painting. I was born in Vancouver and graduated from the University of British Columbia in 1970, and in 1979 I graduated with honours from the Art Center, College of Design in Pasadena, California. I freelance in photography and painting and teach both through private clubs, senior centres, and at a variety of venues throughout the greater Vancouver area.

I still live in the Vancouver area and travel as much as I can to experience what nature has to offer. I have worked on cruise ships and still take my painting/photography students on an annual cruise to Alaska where I offer watercolour lessons on the ship while at sea.

I have written a book on British Columbia, titled 'British Columbia - Graced by Nature's Palette'. It depicts my province's scenery, flora and fauna, and includes several of my watercolour paintings as well, for which I have received a flattering endorsement from wildlife artist Robert Bateman.
