This one day workshop is perfect for artists looking to experiment in new media. Caroline will guide you through the creation of loose, expressive pieces full of texture and intuitive mark-making using oils and cold wax. Learn new techniques and get ideas to apply to your own practice. Try something fun and new!

Workshop Overview
Experiment with mark-marking using traditional and unconventional materials to foster your own unique painterly handwriting. We will create alla prima abstract paintings in this workshop, to learn and experience the range of techniques possible to you whether you’re a representational or abstract artist. We will explore ways in which a representational painting can loosen up with abstraction while still preserving the necessary precise details. This workshop is also perfect for abstract painters looking to experiment intuitively with a new medium. With oils and cold wax, the rules of fat over lean do not apply; this encourages the exploration of endless possibilities!
Workshop Objectives
  • Introduction to materials
  • Creating texture and how to combine Gamblin’s mediums with cold wax to achieve a range of textures
  • Review of traditional and unconventional tools for mark-making
  • How to add abstraction, and approach painting more experimentally and intuitively
  • Design discussion and creation of alla prima abstract paintings
  • Experimental techniques on wood panel, including how to work in layers and add transparency, adding veils of color, how to work with masks and subtractive techniques, and adding mixed media elements
  • Cold wax painting on wood panel
  • One-on-one advice for each student, including a review of artistic objectives with a discussion of which techniques can best add to each student’s practice; students are welcome to bring in a work for a personalized review

About the Instructor - Caroline Dahlmanns2019_Fall_Dahlmanns

A native New Yorker, I am an artist living in Vancouver, BC. Using oil and cold wax, I strive to capture the essence and characters of my subjects with thick, sensual texture and loose brushwork. My inspiration comes from all over: the beauty of a particular gesture, luminous light, the feel and energy of a tender encounter with another, the physical beauty of my surroundings. Most of all, I strive to communicate the essential energy of a moment.

My works are in private collections in North America, Europe, and Asia. An Active Member of the Federation of Canadian Artists and member of the North Vancouver Arts Council, I studied at the School of Visual Arts, Parsons School of Design, Grand Central Atelier, Art Students League of New York and hold a B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania.
