As part of the Canada Summer jobs program, the FCA is offering two positions: 1) Educational Programming Assistant, and 2) Gallery Assistant.

 

The FCA is a non-profit arts service organization, founded in 1941 by Members of the Group of Seven.

 

We exist today to support, promote and provide opportunities for both professional and emerging artists across Canada. At 2,600 members strong, we have 12 Chapters and are growing.

 

With the provision of exhibition, education and networking opportunities, we’re uniting the nation through the visual arts, and proud of it.

 

 

Opportunity #1

 
       

Canada Summer Jobs Position: Gallery Assistant

Hours: 35 hours per week

Duration: 8 weeks

Remuneration: $14 per hour

 

Responsibilities:

Under the direction of the Gallery Coordinator, the Gallery Assistant:

  • Is an ambassador for the organization at all times
  • Welcomes visitors and informs them of current exhibitions and programs
  • Connects clients with artworks and makes fine art sales
  • Answers telephones, redirects calls and assists members
  • Registers members for workshops
  • Completes administrative and data entry tasks
  • Cleaning of gallery space
  • Painting and repair of gallery space
  • Assists with exhibition installation and take-down

 

Skills and Qualifications:

A successful candidate will:

  • Applicant must be betweenn the ages of 15 and 30
  • Be eager to learn and a desire to gain valuable experience
  • Have a passion for the visual arts
  • Have an outgoing and friendly personality
  • Have the ability to work efficiently both independently and as part of a team
  • Demonstrate good time management
  • Use discretion when handling and recording private information
  • Take the initiative during quieter times
  • Be proficient in Windows 10, MS Office and social media platforms

A second language and non profit and/or gallery experience are an asset. Experience with Photoshop and the Adobe Creative Suite are also beneficial.

 

 
Opportunity #2  
  Canada Summer Jobs Position: Education Programming Assistant

Hours: 35 hours per week

Duration: 8 weeks

Remuneration: $14 per hour

 

The ideal candidate will be:

  • Outgoing, energetic and have an approachable personality
  • Confident in the Adobe Creative Suite – Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator or a combination of these
  • An excellent communicator with great interpersonal skills across all touch methods – call, email or in person
  • Highly organized with good time-management
  • Attentive to details
  • Able to prioritize effectively
  • An effective problem solver and trouble-shooter
  • Creative – you’ve got to be to work with us!

 Tasks and Responsibilities:

Assisting the Education Coordinator (EC) in developing and delivering educational programing.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Creating promotional material for art workshops, classes and fundraising events
  • Developing an advertising strategy with the Educational Coordinator for specific events and workshops
  • Distributing promotional material  for educational programming across digital platforms and social media
  • Preparing, setting up and taking down classroom space
  • Collecting feedback surveys, compiling responses and writing feedback reports to assist in future program development
  • Spearheading 2019 Summer Plein Air Paint Out Programming and Mini Residency Programs
  • Responsible for sourcing suitable venues for plein air paint out events
  • Creating promotional material and enrollment for plein air paint out events
  • Oversee registration for plein air paint out events
  • Communicate with plein air instructors regarding their art student enrollment
  • Communicate with art students details about their plein air session
  • Schedule artists for Mini Residencies
  • Brief artists about their mini-residencies, collect feedback from artists and report back to the Education Coordinator
  • Membership and office administration assistance

 Language Requirement: English, a second language is an asset

Permanent: Gallery Sales Associate

Hours: 40 hours per week

Duration: permanent

Remuneration: $15 per hour plus benefits

 

This opportunity is a chance for you to combine a passion for art with your customer service and sales skills. Based in the vibrant arts community on Granville Island, the Federation of Canadian Artists is looking for an outgoing, personable and motivated Gallery Sales Associate to join our team at the Federation Gallery.

Candidates must be comfortable engaging with customers to provide information about the featured artists, artwork, and the Federation. The ideal candidate has a high E.Q. and an assertive personality. A combination of tact and service-focused professionalism is key.

The Sales Associate is a first point of contact for the gallery and an advocate for the Federation. As such, they must have a professional demeanour and appearance and an energetic and social personality. Desirable applicants will be personable, outgoing and feel comfortable working with a wide variety of people. In addition applicants are expected to be well organized, reliable, and flexible.

The primary role of a Sales Associate is to assist customers in choosing art that fits well with their current collections or help them in choosing gifts for clients, business partners or friends and family. In addition to sales you’ll serve as first contact with our member artists, help with gallery events and exhibition installation and take-down. As a key member of a small team you will also assist a team of professionals in various tasks that support other departments. 

Further duties will include helping clients and members over the phone and by email, ensuring the gallery stays clean and organized and helping with special events and fundraisers.

The Gallery Sales Associate will look to implement new and improve upon existing sales practices and strategies. During quiet times the Gallery Sales Associate will be proactive in promoting the gallery, exhibitions and member artists across digital and print platforms.

An effective Gallery Sales Associate is an excellent listener who can ascertain a customer’s needs and advise them accordingly. Knowledge in and a passion for art is an asset, prior experience with a commercial gallery would serve you well in this role.

MS Office Suite experience is required. Social media experience as well as Adobe Creative Suite is an asset. Fluency in English is required, and a second language is an asset.
