Description:
BC’s West Coast inspires me. In particular, I am drawn to the Arbutus Tree, which can be found where land meets water: a meditative place of energy, mystery and spirit. "The Salish Sea Flood" is inspired by a story about how the Arbutus Tree helped save Indigenous people by anchoring their canoes. The painting depicts the narrative moment just after the climax of the human vs. nature conflict where hope has arrived (heralded by the crow with a branch), the frothy flood waters are receding from land, and the sun is breaking through the stormy sky.
