CONCEPT: Hidden Identities

My Resurrection Series of paintings is inspired by the method and media of its creation: I paint the human figure directly over a portrait I have previously painted from life. In a literal act of recycling, I re-animate the portrait’s spirit into an entirely new body and scene. The viewer is not meant to see the underlying portrait, though it peeks through here and there, guiding subject matter, composition, colour, theme. The paintings in this series are linked conceptually by the theme of hidden identities: the interplay of the seen and the unseen, and the many layers inbetween.

“Pride 2” takes a different twist on the concept of hidden identities, playing with themes of dress and undress; the relationship of kink to authority; vulnerability and domination; appropriation and subversion of symbols; and unmasking sexuality. A fun take on “clothes make the man”. The interplay of overt and hidden identity adds a delicious ambiguity to this piece.
