This is the last scene from H.P. Lovecraft’s novel “At the Mountains of Madness”, when the Antarctic explorer Danforth looks back behind his airplane and sees a “final horror” so terrifying that it drives him insane.
We never find out what he saw.
All we have are the incoherent ramblings of a mad man:
“the carven rim”
“the colour out of space”
“the moon ladder”
“the original, the eternal, the undying”
"A single fantastic, daemoniac glimpse, among the churning zenith clouds, of what lay back of those other violet westward mountains which the Old Ones had shunned and feared."
