FCA Toronto: 2021 Spring Forward Online Juried Exhibition

Exhibition Type: An online juried exhibition for FCA Toronto artists under the FCA banner.*
* Artworks accepted into this show will be eligible for FCA signature points, even though the show is being hosted online.  This is a temporary exemption from the FCA's normal policy re: online chapter exhibitions due to the lockdown measures in force in Toronto prohibiting the opening of art galleries.  If Toronto relaxes the rules by May, FCA Toronto may still decide it's not practical or feasible to host the show in Toronto's Art of Emotions gallery, as originally planned. In that case, we'll follow the normal FCA policy and declare that the show is not a qualifying one for signature status points. We'll notify participants as soon as possible about any change in this aspect of the exhibition.

FCA Toronto is hosting its first spring online exhibition, May 10 to May 31, 2021.  This will be a juried exhibition and sale of original artwork by FCA Toronto artists.

Cash prizes will be awarded to winning entries as follows: 1st place $500, 2nd Place $250, and 3rd Place $100.

To be eligible to submit an entry, artists must be members in good standing of the national FCA with Active or Signature status and they must also be affiliated with the Toronto chapter.

The media acceptable for this exhibition include acrylic, graphite, mixed media, oil, pastel, pencil, water media and hand-pulled prints in runs of up to 200.  When submitting their entries, artists should also indicate the support they used as well as the medium, e.g., acrylic on canvas, oil on linen, etc.

All styles and subject matter are acceptable.

Every artwork submitted must comply with the Federation of Canadian Artists’ standard set of terms and conditions.

Submitted work must be original work by the artist, not copies or derivatives of the work of others or in any way an infringement of copyright. While using photos as a reference for painting is a long-held accepted practice, using stock imagery or photographs taken by professional photographers is not permissible at FCA Toronto, even with the photographer's permission or with a paid license to reproduce the image.  All artists accepted into FCA Toronto's exhibition must confirm that their artwork is not a copy, derivative or based on the work of others, or in any way an infringement of Canadian copyright law.

All artworks accepted into the exhibition must be for sale and be kept available for the duration of the show.  If the artwork in the exhibition is sold through the exposure FCA Toronto provides on its website and social media platforms, then the Artist is obliged to pay FCA Toronto a 20% sales commission on the advertised price within 30 days of receiving payment from the buyer.

Full details about the exhibition with terms and conditions can be found on our website,

FCA Guidelines:

Artwork that wins an award in any FCA exhibition may not be entered into any other Federation exhibition, except when the first exhibition was a Chapter exhibition and the following exhibition is a National Open Exhibition or an exhibition held at the Federation Gallery.

If you have already successfully submitted artwork to an exhibition hosted by this Chapter, (the piece was included in some capacity, either live at a venue or in an online gallery), you cannot submit the same piece to a different exhibition hosted by the same Chapter, again.

Copyright and Standards

The following excerpt is taken from the Federation Policy Manual:

"7.1.5 While using photos as reference for painting is a long-held accepted practice, making substantive use of stock imagery or photos taken by professional photographers is not permissible, even with their permission. Photographs by professional photographers are considered artworks in and of themselves. Reference photos must be taken by the artist themselves or provided to them by an amateur photographer with their express consent. Stock images may only be referred to for anatomical study and must be incidental to the completed artwork to be permissible".

While an artist may have paid a licensing fee or retrieved explicit written permission that places them on the right side of copyright laws, Federation Standards do not permit the use of stock photography or reference material from another artist - even with permission or paid licensing.

Federation Standards are different than copyright laws, submitting artists must adhere to both to avoid being removed from the exhibition - if in doubt about the source material of your artwork - do not submit it.

To enter this exhibition, you must be an Active or Signature member in good standing with the Federation of Canadian Artists in Vancouver and the hosting Chapter.

You will need a username and password to log in. If you need assistance resetting this information please contact or by calling 604-681-2744.

Please watch the tutorial video here if you need assistance with your digital upload. Do not leave submitting until the last minute. You cannot edit or add to your number of entries once you have started your submission.
