Toronto Chapter: 2021 Show Up Show

2021_Toronto_Show-UpShow

Help FCA Toronto celebrate the re-emergence of a chapter of the Federation of Canadian Artists in Toronto with its first live exhibition!  We are hosting this show in the last two weeks of September at the new Art of Emotions Gallery in Toronto. It will be accompanied with an online exhibition.

Our "Show-Up Show" will be a juried exhibition and sale of original artwork by FCA Toronto artists who are Active or Signature Status members of the national FCA. This live exhibition will qualify for a Signature Status point.

Cash prizes will be awarded to winning entries as follows:
1st place $500
2nd Place $250
3rd Place $100
3 Honourable Mentions

To be eligible to submit an entry, artists must be members in good standing of the national FCA with Active or Signature status and they must also be affiliated with the Toronto chapter. Supporting members are not permitted to enter Chapter exhibitions.

All styles and subject matter are acceptable.

The media acceptable for this exhibition include acrylic, graphite, mixed media, oil, pastel, pencil, water media and hand-pulled prints in runs of up to 200.

All artwork must be ready to hang.

When submitting their entries, artists should indicate the framed dimensions of their artwork and the support they used, as well as the medium, e.g., acrylic on canvas, oil on linen, etc.

Every artwork submitted must comply with the Federation of Canadian Artists’ standard set of terms and conditions.

Submitted work must be original work by the artist, not copies or derivatives of the work of others or in any way an infringement of copyright. While using photos as a reference for painting is a long-held accepted practice, using stock imagery or photographs taken by professional photographers is not permissible at FCA Toronto, even with the photographer's permission or with a paid license to reproduce the image.  All artists accepted into FCA Toronto's exhibition must confirm that their artwork is not a copy, derivative or based on the work of others, or in any way an infringement of Canadian copyright law.

All artworks accepted into the exhibition must be for sale and be kept available for the duration of the show.

If the artwork in the exhibition is sold at the Art of Emotions Gallery (or through the exposure FCA Toronto has provided online on its website and social media platforms), the art gallery and FCA Toronto will collect a commission of 35%.  (20% for FCA Toronto and 15% for Art of Emotions Gallery).  Payment to artists will be made by e-transfer within 30 days of receiving payment from the buyer. Full details about the exhibition with terms and conditions can be found on our website, https://www.fcatoronto.ca/calls-for-entry-fall-2021/

General Guidelines for FCA Exhibitions

Artwork that wins an award in any FCA exhibition may not be entered into any other Federation exhibition, except when the first exhibition was a Chapter exhibition and the following exhibition is a National Open Exhibition or an exhibition held at the Federation Gallery.

If you have already successfully submitted artwork to an exhibition hosted by this Chapter, (the piece was included in some capacity, either live at a venue or in an online gallery), you cannot submit the same piece to a different exhibition hosted by the same Chapter, again.

Copyright and Standards

The following excerpt is taken from the Federation Policy Manual:

"7.1.5 While using photos as a reference for painting is a long-held accepted practice, making substantive use of stock imagery or photos taken by professional photographers is not permissible, even with their permission. Photographs by professional photographers are considered artworks in and of themselves. Reference photos must be taken by the the artist themselves or provided to them by an amateur photographer with their express consent. Stock images may only be referred to for anatomical study and must be incidental to the completed artwork to be permissible".

While an artist may have paid a licensing fee or retrieved explicit written permission that places them on the right side of copyright laws, Federation Standards do not permit the use of stock photography or reference material from another artist - even with permission or paid licensing.

Federation Standards are different than copyright laws, submitting artists must adhere to both to avoid being removed from the exhibition - if in doubt about the source material of your artwork - do not submit it.
