Growing up in the Black Forest, Germany, I was always intrigued by a statue of a stag that graces the most narrow spot of a gorge, called the “Höllental” (Hell’s Valley). Legend has it that back in the day, a knight from a nearby castle was pursuing a deer and as the animal approached the gorge, the hunter was sure of his catch. Yet, the stag jumped the - at the time approximately 10 meter - wide gap and escaped the hunter. To honour the courage of this animal, a statue was erected at this spot and every traveller going up the treacherous passage turns their head to catch a glimpse of it.
