My series of “road” paintings, depicting the two-lane pre-2010 Olympics Highway 99, functions as an iconic historical record of a transportation artery that offered copious aesthetic pleasures and not only influenced commuters but also shaped communities. For years, both my husband and I, and many of our neighbours, accepted the challenge of working in Vancouver and residing in Squamish. The daily negotiation of the “Sea to Sky” was a major component of that challenge enabling us to maintain a home in paradise while earning a living in the “big city.” Today, we live, play, and work in our community, cultivating a life change that removes the necessity of a daily two-hour drive; nevertheless, the old corniche evokes significant memories of the commuter’s impulse to choose nature over skyscraper.
