 About the Instructor -

Frank Townsley

"I am an avid naturalist and traveler who loves to document life's experiences in photography and painting. I was born in Vancouver and graduated from the University of British Columbia in 1970, and in 1979 I graduated with honours from the Art Center, College of Design in Pasadena, California. I freelance in photography and painting and teach both through private clubs, senior centres, and at a variety of venues throughout the greater Vancouver area.

I still live in the Vancouver area and travel as much as I can to experience what nature has to offer. I have worked on cruise ships and still take my painting/photography students on an annual cruise to Alaska where I offer watercolour lessons on the ship while at sea.

I have written a book on British Columbia, titled 'British Columbia - Graced by Nature's Palette'. It depicts my province's scenery, flora and fauna, and includes several of my watercolour paintings as well, for which I have received a flattering endorsement from wildlife artist Robert Bateman.

If you're looking for a fun way to spend a Saturday, and come away with an intuative mixed media painting, this "one shot" workshop with Sandrine is for you!

Forgo your reference photos and discover a more organic and joyful way of painting!

Workshop Overview

You'll start your time with Sandrine by learning to properly mount yupo paper to board, then using a three-stage approach, you'll discover how to pull flowers from your mind, and watch them bloom on paper.

You'll drop in color (ink, watercolor or fluid acrylics) to create abstract backgrounds full of beautiful textures and blooms.

Just like searching for shapes in the clouds, you'll then search for shapes in your background suggestive of blossoms and leaves. Painting negatively around them, you'll watch the flowers emerge!

Then you'll add patterns in pen to create a lovely, faux collage effect - evocative of Sandrine's signature style.

Never again will you be stuck for ideas or dependent on a photo. Every flower you paint will be unique, personal, and fresh from your imagination!

Workshop Objectives

Students will work on two paintings, one on canvas and one on yupo paper mounted on board.

Depending on how fast you like to work, you will either leave the class with two finished paintings or two works that are well on their way to being finished, and the knowledge you need to finish them at home.

For this class, you will need the following supplies:

About the Instructor - Caroline Dahlmanns2019_Fall_Dahlmanns

A native New Yorker, I am an artist living in Vancouver, BC. Using oil and cold wax, I strive to capture the essence and characters of my subjects with thick, sensual texture and loose brushwork. My inspiration comes from all over: the beauty of a particular gesture, luminous light, the feel and energy of a tender encounter with another, the physical beauty of my surroundings. Most of all, I strive to communicate the essential energy of a moment.

My works are in private collections in North America, Europe, and Asia. An Active Member of the Federation of Canadian Artists and member of the North Vancouver Arts Council, I studied at the School of Visual Arts, Parsons School of Design, Grand Central Atelier, Art Students League of New York and hold a B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania.

This one day workshop is perfect for artists looking for something a little different from your average landscape painting workshop. Known for his iconic and evocative depictions of Vancouver's grittier downtown east side, Jeff's workshop is a change of pace and perspective from what you may be used to, suitable for artists looking to explore different subject matter and shake up their art practice.

Workshop Overview

Urban landscapes can provide some of the most compelling compositions for a painter, but the tonal light and colour common in the Lower Mainland can lead to disappointing and frustrating pictures.  This workshop is designed to give participants the confidence to approach urban subjects, through instruction on colour mixing, composition, and direct practice.

Workshop Objectives

§  Morning:  The instructor will give a short verbal presentation on acrylic paints as a medium, and their application to the rural landscape, including appropriate colour palettes and compositional considerations.  The students will work through a series of colour mixing exercises appropriate to the chosen composition, led by the instructor.

§  Afternoon:  Students will complete a 16”x20” painting from an agreed common composition.  The Instructor will lead in stages, followed by the students.  The Instructor provide personal advice to each participant.
