Oil and acrylic painters are welcome to join this workshop!

If you can paint small you can paint big. Small paintings allow deep understanding of brushwork, pigments, mediums and subject. Small formats give space to think and explore without the overwhelming pressure of filling a large support.

In this workshop the attendees will work on a series of 5 simple single still life subjects that they bring to the class. Each attendee will receive ten 2.5” x 3.5” boards on which to execute the single subject as well as five frames that accommodate the boards. On the final day, the attendees will choose their favourite 5 pieces to pop into the frames. This workshop is focused on the attendees painting.

Workshop Overview

On the morning of the first day all still life objects are pooled, the instructor will add more challenging pieces. The instructor will briefly demonstrate how to focus on the essential in the subject through brushwork and colour choice and the attendees will execute their first 2 still lifes. The instructor will assess their skill level and determine what needs to be focused on in the afternoon.
In the afternoon, the instructor will start with a brief demonstration of painting a still life object with focus on the elements that the attendees were struggling with. The attendees will finish the day by starting and possibly completing their third still life.
The morning of the second day will start with a Q&A and attendees will launch into their fourth still life with the the instructor providing one on one feedback to the
attendees. 30 minutes before lunch, the instructor will do another quick demo.
On the final afternoon, the attendees will attempt to complete their pentad while receiving one on one feedback and the afternoon will culminate in the framing of the five
works and the attendees will be offer one piece each which will be joined to make a larger single piece.

  • The difference between painting and drawing with your brush
  • How to identify the essence of the subject
  • How to make colour choices that make a small format exciting

And:

  • To leave the workshop having had fun and feeling fullfilled with a selection of small works.

About the Instructor - Leanne Christie

SpringProgram2020_LeanneChristie

Urban Oil painter Leanne M Christie has a reputation for complex paintings that are built with powerful brushwork and the sophisticated manipulation of white. She paints full time in her Vancouver studio and, when not accompanied by her PADS puppy in training, her 50km cycling commute from her home in Coquitlam, gives Christie an intimate kinship with the flow of the urban streets. The unrehearsed transitory moments provide the abundant source of her paintings.

Born and raised in South Africa, Christie moved to the Canadian West Coast in the late 2000’s after a period of 10 years abroad that had originated as a 2 week holiday after the completion of her Bachelor of Fine Art from Rhodes University.

 2020Spring_LeanneChristie

Christie’s paintings are at first understood by the viewer whose participation is then demanded by her relentless harnessing of the communicative properties unique to oil painting. The distilled open relationship between the painter and the slow drying oil painting is the unique characteristic of the medium that Christie burrows into in order to activate the complexity that is developed through the alchemy of passive and active time. Active time that is dependant on the relationships that the viewer is able to develop with the work.

2020Spring_Leanne

Christie’s concept of complexity through the inclusion of active and passive time as a catalytic element in the paintings finds the perfect partner in her urban subjects which are naturally founded on the complex relationships of the urban citizen and urban politics.

Workshop Overview

Have you ever struggled to capture the real essence and feeling of your landscape photos on canvas?
In this workshop, you will learn how to create distinctive, unique paintings from your own photos that reflect all the magic of time and place.

In the morning of each day you will define why and how you want to paint this particular landscape, exploring the mood, colour, edges and marks that will help to convey your concept. You will experiment with composition, consider values and perspective, and explore techniques to bring your vision to life.
In the afternoon you will develop your painting on a larger canvas. After the morning’s exploration, you will have researched the possibilities for your painting and decided on your course of action. Now on this larger canvas you will be able to paint with freedom and joy allowing your personal style to emerge.
Through this 2-day workshop you will learn through a variety of demos, explanation, and one-on-one support from Sue as you work in your choice of acrylic or oil from your own photos.
