Backlit Backyard

Description:
This painting is based on a photograph I captured in Santa María del Oro, Mexico. What first caught my attention was the late-day light filtering through the trees, turning a simple backyard into a study of contrast and atmosphere.
The laundry line creates a quiet band of color against deep shadow, while the tire swing hangs motionless in the foreground—subtle reminders of daily life. Strong backlighting casts long, cool shadows across the warm earth, creating a clear temperature shift and guiding the eye into the scene.
I simplified forms to emphasize value relationships and structure rather than detail. The dark vertical trunks anchor the composition, while luminous foliage and the glowing ground plane hold the light. The painting explores how ordinary spaces can become quietly dramatic when shaped by light and shadow.
