This three day workshop will apply the use of a design process in organizing and completing a painting, with composition as a focus.

The Design Elements and Design Principles act as check and balance, and will be discussed as part of Atyeo's painting demonstrations.

If you are having fun with paint but also having difficulty achieving unity in your paintings, this workshop would be of interest to you.

Atyeo will demonstrate a lesson in painting each morning, followed by workshop participants painting in the afternoon.

The Instructor

Joining us from Nova Scotia, Brian Atyeo is a 20th-century Canadian painter best known for his colorful depictions of rugged Canadian landscapes. Working in a style based in the tradition of the famed Canadian Group of Seven painters, Atyeo brings a lyrical approach to his observations of Northern terrains.

Born in 1950 in Toronto, Canada, he went on to work as an architectural illustrator in western and central Canada until 1980, when he decided to devote himself to his own painting practice. He is a member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour and the Ontario Society of Artists. Atyeo travels throughout Canada making plein-air paintings year round.

Paint as the subject - is a concept that most artists at some point in their development consider, as a new way of thinking.

Contemporary painting has allowed this thinking to produce some of the most powerful images in art.

Using both representational and abstract approaches, we will discuss and demonstrate this thinking. This workshop will appeal to those who want more than just the obvious nature of their chosen subject to be the dominant aspect of their art.

I will demonstrate a lesson in painting each morning, followed by workshop participants painting in the afternoon.

Workshop Overview

Accurate colour mixing is first and foremost, about training the eye to see accurately. It is secondly about learning principles and techniques that will help get the mixture correct, every time.

In this three-day course Master Instructor Gaye Adams will give you the direction you need to do just that, through learning the basic principles of subtractive colour mixing.

Students will then complete a series of painting exercises designed to further solidify the principles of colour mixing that you've learned. You will learn not only how to mix the right color, but also discover how to get the intensity and tonality correct, which is absolutely necessary in order to make the light in a painting convincing and compelling.

Instead of settling for colours that are almost what you wanted, you'll learn how to arrive at the mixtures you really wanted, every, single, time. This is a wonderful tool to add to your kit!

“Snow isn’t white; white is not even white” - Michael Abraham

Workshop Overview

By simplifying what you look at, through finding shape, considering the five elemental forms, and using a few key tools to assess the tones and contrast and the variations within tonal ranges, you’ll be able paint images with a dynamic range of tone, and more confidently, convincingly making for a stronger graphic readability to your work whether it be landscape, portrait, still life or abstract.

Together you will explore and understand the variations in light and shade, lightness or darkness of objects and spaces, local tone and colour, and how light and atmosphere play and bounce on forms and textures to create the illusion of three-dimensionality.

Abraham's accessible approach to teaching, through discussion, demonstration and exercise will have you feeling confident about your approach to tonal values in no time. His personable approach speaks much to the appeal of his teaching style, so you'll learn and enjoy yourself thoroughly in the process.

Class Objectives
The objective is not to come a way with one ‘good enough’ workshop painting, but to come away with a variety of skills and thinking tips to simplify and unify tones and values, which will make any painting going forward a good painting!

Students will come away understanding lighting of elemental forms, have a better understanding of how to make strong design and value patterns, and essential drawing points to make drawing and painting easier.

Abraham will walk you through a few exercises using comparative points, analytical questions, and working from bigger simplicity into smaller simplicities (detail).

You'll come to see what works in shading, colouring, lighting, creating focus, creating separation and more, until thinking about tonal arrangements becomes second nature.

PRICING: Members $220 / Non-Members $270

SUPPLY LIST

Workshop Overview

Throughout the workshop, Paul will be doing demonstrations and hands-on instruction. This is the time tested method of teaching and learning. The handling and management of paint, the correct direction of brushstrokes, the density and bush-ability of paint and applied pressure are skills best learnt through observation.

Students will learn to copy and replicate the brush work and colors of Master Painters from the past. Starting with Tom Thomson as the first project to the second painting where students select their choice of a Master painting to copy from. Copying the brushwork form a variety of painters enables one to be more versatile and flexible. This will become a skill that is of great value when facing the challenges of a variety of subject matter. Often times painters become too familiar with their own techniques and paint application and it is always advisable to learn to adapt to methods of painting and brushwork not previously explored. The importance of the direction of brush work and how the eye moves around a painting will be explored.

Discussions and demonstrations will help students gain more confidence in the handling of oil paint, the use and choice of various brushes and how oil painting mediums impact the flow of paint. Oil painting concepts such as imprimatura, tonal methods, sight size measurements will be taught.

Class Objectives

Your first day will see you watching as Chizik completes a demonstration from a Master painting of Tom Thompson. You'll then be challenged to copy the piece under Chizik;s guidance.

Your second day involves setting your own bar to meet. Students will bring their own reproduction of a Masters painting to copy. Choose a painting with active and varied brushstrokes from either the  American or French Impressionist, Post Impressionist or Canadian Impressionist or Group of Seven.

Workshop Overview

Backgrounds can be tricky for many artists. The default is often to just paint literally from your reference photo. Or to not do a background at all. Sometimes this is a good choice but sometimes it isn’t. This workshop will introduce several different background treatments that students can add to their tool kit. A change in background treatment can have a profound effect on the look of your painting. The goal will be to encourage participants to think outside the box a little more.

Class Objectives

Through demonstation and one to one instruction, participants will explore layering, glazing, and wet-in-wet techniques; both in the background and the subject. The demo will be a simple still life and students can choose to work from the same demo photo, or use a reference of their own.

Workshop Overview

One of the best ways to learn the complexities of painting is to watch someone paint. The subtleties of color mixing, loading the brush with just enough paint and the pressure and touch of the hand is clarified when watching others paint. The varied consistency of paint is best learnt this way.

During the two-day workshop Liza will start with a demonstration. Using one of her own photographs as a starting point. Our focus will be to translate and interpret photographs into the language of paint. Utilizing the photo as a tool and source of inspiration and not as a mere copying device, people will broaden their painting skills.

Students will have the opportunity to select their own subject matter while applying traditional oil painting techniques.

Class Objectives

Through the completion of two paintings, students will focus on paint application, color mixing, measurements and gain a personal understanding and confidence when choosing photography as a starting point. This will aid in the transition into working directly from life, whether it is landscape, still life or portraiture.

Workshop

Overview

Making our best work involves developing our technical skills and, at the same time, deepening our intuitive skills. We open wish our work had greater depth, significance, personal satisfaction; something calls us and we want to respond to that. In this class, the instructor will work with students at any level to connect to the excitement of learning to answer that call.

While going through a variety of exercises developed to open one to creative expression, students will be asked to reflect on their own inspiration, emotions, and stories. The goal is that you understand the importance of ‘digging deeper’, as well as shift your point of view and free your mind.

While learning ways of rendering objects more quickly and intuitively you will be also learning to think symbolically and make connections between what stirs inside you and what resonates with you in the outside world. Here lies the heart of a painting.

Class Objectives

Take away a renewed connection to your creative source and an ability to see the world from a new perspective.
