About the Instructor - Leanne Christie, SFCA

SpringProgram2020_LeanneChristie

Urban Oil painter Leanne M Christie has a reputation for complex paintings that are built with powerful brushwork and the sophisticated manipulation of her medium. She paints full time in her Vancouver studio and, when not accompanied by her PADS puppy in training, her 50km cycling commute from her home in Coquitlam, gives Christie an intimate kinship with the flow of the urban streets. The unrehearsed transitory moments provide the abundant source of her paintings.

Born and raised in South Africa, Christie moved to the Canadian West Coast in the late 2000’s after a period of 10 years abroad that had originated as a 2 week holiday after the completion of her Bachelor of Fine Art from Rhodes University.

Christie’s paintings are at first understood by the viewer whose participation is provoked by her relentless harnessing of the communicative properties unique to oil painting. The distilled open relationship between the painter and the slow drying oil painting is the characteristic of the medium that Christie burrows into in order to activate the complexity that is developed through the alchemy of passive and active time. Active time that is dependant on the relationships that the viewer is able to develop with the work.

Christie’s concept of complexity through the inclusion of active and passive time as a catalytic element in the paintings finds the perfect partner in her urban subjects which are naturally founded on the complex relationships of the urban citizen and urban politics.

Workshop Overview

Frustrated with bad pictures of your paintings? Trying to submit to a show but the colour is all wrong? Are your images washed out and everything is askew? And you are not sure how to create 300ppi JPG images of your artwork for your portfolio?

The most crucial task for you when submitting to a show or when creating your portfolio for a membership application is to make sure that the artwork photographs you’re including are of the highest quality possible. Whether taken by camera or phone, the photographs must be in perfect condition to convey the true beauty and essence of your works.

This course is designed for artists who want to learn on how best to photograph their art with either a smartphone, a tablet, or a digital point and shoot camera.

Kato will teach the basic processes involved in lighting, photographing, importing and editing images. You will take away practical ways to improve your artwork photographs and increase your chances to successfully submit your artwork images for shows and membership applications.

Please send your questions that you would like to ask Kato about using your camera/phone/tablet and software in advance to education@artists.ca.
