In the myths of many places, Raven was once white. In ancient Greece, Apollo turned the bird black for bringing an unwanted truth, while on Canada’s west coast, the trickster’s feathers turned dark from soot when he stole all the light in the world—which had been hidden away in a box—and brought fire to humankind. Though the Norse god Odin’s twin ravens were always black, their names—Thought and Memory—follow the same theme of enlightenment found elsewhere in the world.
