Description:
The term “queen” is gay slang for a man with feminine or flamboyant characteristics. While in some contexts it remains a derogatory term, it has recently been reappropriated and used for self-identification. A Queen in Bloom is a portrait of my partner, Lucas. I was interested in playing with this term and using it to show my love for this person. First, I painted Lucas wearing a traditional men's dress coat and gazing into the distance in a realistic manner. Then, working with impasto oil paint, I sculpted a vibrant yellow crown, necklace, and earring on top of the fully rendered portrait. Using the same technique I painted blue flowers, like affectionate absent-minded doodles, and placed them all over the composition. In doing such, it has been my intention to deface the traditional oil painting and create a childlike rendition of a royal portrait.
