CONCEPT: Hidden Identities

My Resurrection Series of paintings is inspired by the method and media of its creation: I paint the human figure directly over a portrait I have previously painted from life. In a literal act of recycling, I re-animate the portrait’s spirit into an entirely new body and scene. The viewer is not meant to see the underlying portrait, though it peeks through here and there, guiding subject matter, composition, colour, theme. The paintings in this series are linked conceptually by the theme of hidden identities: the interplay of the seen and the unseen, and the many layers inbetween.

In “Arbutus” a male figure dances across a green background, much like the feeling evoked by our beloved, sinuous - and feminine - arbutus trees that reach their way through the Pacific Northwest temperate rainforest towards the light. The figure is painted over a portrait of a still elegant elderly woman posed in a moment of reflection about her long past career as a professional ballet dancer.
