The French author Alfred Jarry wrote a proto-Dada play with this name, and it was first performed - once and only once - on December 10, 1896. According to Wikipedia, “it was considered a wild, bizarre and comic play, significant for the way it overturns cultural norms.” Essentially, Ubu was an an evil clown who gained power and wreaked havoc once he had it.
