Description:
In Hardy Island Viewpoint, I sought to capture the raw beauty and resilience of the arbutus tree—a defining symbol of the West Coast landscape. Perched on the rocky shores of Hardy Island, located on BC’s Sunshine Coast, this tree overlooks the vast ocean, a sentinel standing firm against the elements. Its vibrant bark, peeling to reveal hues of burnt orange and ochre, embodies a natural elegance that contrasts with the rugged, grey stone and the ever-changing blues of the Pacific waters. The arbutus tree’s twisting, sinuous form mirrors the story of survival and adaptation. This work is not merely a portrait of a tree; it’s an homage to the connection between land and sea that defines the coastal identity of British Columbia. Through this painting, I invite viewers to reflect on their own connection to nature, resilience, and the enduring spirit of the arbutus tree—an emblem of life lived boldly, even on the edge.
