Canvas Unbound 2015

Exposed canvas has a bad reputation. Criticized for being raw, lazy and unfinished, Canvas Unbound challenges the notion that framing an artwork gives it more artistic weight, polish, completion.

Framing creates a boundary between the viewer, the work and the artist. Frames can change the reading of an artwork. What was intended to be a lighthearted expression of emotion between viewer and artist becomes solemn and inaccessible in a bulky wooden frame. That piece with the sincere political message? Undermined by a ridiculous gilded monstrosity. The meaning intended to be for you to decide? Robbed.

Frames are boundaries where artwork ends and the real world begins. Art needn’t end. Canvas Unbound blurs these boundaries and unleashes art into the real world.
