I love my home waters of the Salish Sea. It worries me to think of the increasing number of ships passing through and the inevitability of an oil spill one day. This coastal ecosystem is precious and precarious. Gone are the days of abundance that I enjoyed as a child. We have overfished our waters and overlogged the land.
Meanwhile, adverse effects from climate change are already being seen. Western Red cedar trees are dying because of hotter and dryer summers. Higher water temperatures are contributing to decline in salmon, a favourite food of the resident killer whales.
