Description:
Our children are faced with environmental challenges caused by insufficient action on the part of governments, corporations, and individuals. We often make choices based on our short-term needs and interests rather than long-term collective interests. It must be scary for young children to see how our world is changing and to hear the predictions of catastrophic impacts on the environment, or to personally experience the impacts through sea level rise, catastrophic storms, and fires raging out of control. Often the choices that we make in our “developed” countries have the greatest impacts on developing countries that do not have the resources to cope with them. There are daily choices that we can make that will help in some small way as well as larger collective efforts that can affect governments and corporations. I wanted to portray how insurmountable and frightening it must seem for children looking into their future. Children also have an inherent concern for suffering animals and I wanted to show the impacts of our actions on rainforest species lost because of deforestation; sea animals affected by net fishing, plastics, and oil spills; and arctic polar bears losing sea ice and food sources.
