Roaming a junkyard in Langley, BC, I came across this scene full of symbols of cultural appropriation, layered on top of one another. Using the scale and composition of a large watercolour, the goal was to create a disturbing composition that makes the viewer aware of how western civilizations have appropriated and trashed symbols of other cultures for millennia. And hint at how the viewer may be complicit in this. Ultimately, I was trying to push the boundaries of the watercolour medium beyond the typical landscapes or portraits.
