Founded in 1941 by working Canadian Artists, including members of the Group of Seven, the Federation of Canadian Artists (FCA) is a non-profit visual arts organization supporting over 2,800 emerging and established artists across Canada. Through our robust education programs—including workshops, critiques, and lectures—led by accomplished artists, we foster creative growth and engagement in the visual arts.
Located on Granville Island in the heart of Vancouver’s arts community, the Federation Gallery presents bi-weekly juried exhibitions and three annual international open calls: On the Edge, the Annual International Representational Exhibition, and the Annual International Mail-In Art Exhibition.
Role Overview
We are seeking an On-Call Contracted Exhibition Preparator to assist with the installation and deinstallation of exhibitions, art handling, and general gallery maintenance. This hands-on position is vital to ensuring the seamless presentation of artwork and the professional upkeep of our gallery space.
Reports to: Gallery Coordinator
Schedule: Variable; typically Sunday afternoons (2:30–5:30 PM) and Monday mornings (9:30 AM–1:00 PM), every other week, with occasional additional shifts.
Key Responsibilities
- Install and deinstall in-gallery exhibitions
- Handle artwork following conservation and safety best practices
- Prepare gallery spaces (painting, wall repair, minor construction, cleaning)
- Use a level to ensure the artworks are properly aligned, and label each piece
- accordingly, following the installation
- Support general maintenance and operational needs
Qualifications
- Degree in Fine Arts, Art History, Design, Museum Studies, or equivalent experience
- 1–2 years of exhibition installation or art handling experience
- Skilled in using hand/power tools and basic carpentry
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work at heights/ladders safely
- Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently and collaboratively
- Valid driver’s license is an asset
- Emergency First Aid certificate and CPR Certificate or acceptable equivalent is an asset
Working Conditions
Work occurs primarily indoors in gallery and studio spaces, occasionally outdoors. Environments may include moderate to high noise levels and varying air quality.
