This close-up composition of a Western Red Cedar on Lover's Walk trail in Stanley Park uses oil and cold wax medium to produce the incredible layers and texture of the bark, which really stands out, especially on the tree trunk. It also enables the depth of the forest to recede into the distance and expose the sunlight filtering through the timber. Needles are produced by scraping into the paint before it dries, exposing the underpainting and the canvas. Applying the paint and scrapping it, with only a palette knife, produces the rustic quality of the beautiful Stanley Park forest.
