Description:
Edith Cavell, a British nurse, worked at the Berkendael Medical Institute in Brussels, Belgium during the First World War. Once Belgium was occupied by the Germans she continued nursing in Brussels, caring for German and Allied soldiers. On October 12, 1915 she was shot in front of a German firing squad for treason because she had assisted Allied soldiers to escape occupied Belgium. The Allied countries considered her a martyr for the cause and hence, many significant monuments have been built or named in her memory. In 1916 in Alberta, Canada in Jasper National Park a series of sites were named in her honour: Mount Edith Cavell, Angel Glacier, Edith Cavell Glacier, and Edith Cavell Pond. This painting is my response to the melting, deflating and dying Edith Cavell Glacier.
Edith Cavell Glacier is missing from the painting, only the throes of dying remains. The Edith Cavell pond created and ever expanding due to the melting glacial waters: weeps, mourning the loss of the mighty glacier that had once been its life force.
