This painting was inspired by a lovely grey Shire gelding I had the pleasure of meeting. I did a photo shoot with him, which led to several paintings. His dapples with the sunlight and shadows on his head and neck were heavenly to paint. I used big brushes and thick oil paint in an impressionistic style to capture his sweet personality and the rich reflected light and colour.
It is interesting to see how, in painting, less often translates into more. The looseness of brushwork in various parts of the painting, translate into a feeling of motion, giving the viewer the sense that the subject will step out of the canvas.
This piece was painted on deep exhibition style canvas with its edges painted so it can hang unframed.
